Somasimarar Nayanar is one of the 63 Nayanmars, the revered saints in Tamil Shaivism known for their profound devotion to Lord Shiva. His story is celebrated for his unwavering faith and dedication to performing rituals in honor of Shiva, despite facing significant challenges.

சோழ நாட்டிலுள்ள திருவம்பர் என்னும் தலத்தில் தூய அந்தணர் மரபிலே பிறந்தவர் தான் மாற நாயனார் என்பவர். இவர் அறவொழுக்கங்களில் நெறிபிறழாது முறையோடு வாழ்ந்து யாவராலும் போற்றப்படும் அளவிற்கு மேம்பட்டு விளங்கினார்.

இவரது திருமேனியிலே எந்நேரமும் திருவெண்ணீறு துலங்கும். நாவிலே நமச்சிவாய மந்திரம் ஒலிக்கும். பாதங்கள் சிவ ஆலயங்களை எந்நேரமும் வலம் வரும். இவ்வாறு நலம் தரும் நாயகனை நாளெல்லாம் போற்றிப் பணிந்தார் அடிகளார்.

இறைவனின் திருவடி நீழலையே பற்றி வீடு பேற்றை அடைவதற்கான ஒப்பற்ற வேள்விகள் பல நடத்தி வந்தார். இவர் நடத்தி வந்த வேள்விகள் பலவற்றிலும் சோம வேள்விதான் மிக மிகச் சிறந்தது.

எண்ணற்ற சோம வேள்விகளைச் செய்தமையால்தான் இவருக்குச் சோமாசி மாறர் என்ற சிறப்புப் பெயர் உண்டாயிற்று. இவர் சிவத்தலங்கள் தோறும் சென்று சிவதரிசனம் செய்து வந்தார். ஒருமுறை திருவாரூரை அடைந்து தேவாசிரியத் திருமண்டபத்தைத் தொழுது நின்றார்.

அப்பொழுது சுந்தரமூர்த்தி சுவாமிகள் பரவை நாச்சியாரோடு திருவாரூருக்கு எழுந்தருளியிருந்தார். அவர்களைக் கண்டதும் நாயனாருக்கு ஏற்பட்ட மகிழ்ச்சிக்கு எல்லையே இல்லை! சோமாசி மாற நாயனார் சுந்தரமூர்த்தி சுவாமிகளின் திருப்பாதம் பணிந்து வழிபட்டார்.

இவருக்கு சுந்தரமூர்த்தி நாயனாரின் அன்பும் அருளும் கிடைத்தது. இவ்வாறு சிவதொண்டு பல புரிந்து வாழ்ந்து வந்த சோமாசி மாற நாயனார் திருவைந்தெழுத்து மகிமையால் விடையில் எழுந்தருளும் சடைமுடிப் பெருமானின் திருவருளைப் பெற்று வாழும் அருந்தவப் பேற்றினைப் பெற்றார்.
